Book excerpt:
It was an age of change, when people were filling the World and the fairies and other folk were retreating into the Otherworld and beyond. In this time, there lived Cleah, a young orphan slave girl who worked in the household of Lord Hugh and his family. Cleah’s days are long and hard, but she finds kindness from Sibby, the widowed cook who took the young orphan under her wing. Sibby has taught Cleah all she knows of kitchen work, but more importantly, she has taught her how to avoid the fairies and others who still claim small parts of the land.
Cleah’s life is suddenly thrown into turmoil when the raiders attack the fortress. Cleah barely escapes alive and while hiding alone and frightened in the forest, she finds Ronan, the wounded son of Lord Hugh, who is the only other survivor of the raid. While trying to find herbs to heal Ronan’s infected wounds, Cleah accidentally steps into fairy territory where she is confronted by Cronarch, a First Fairy of the Second Order in Charge of Strangers and Evil Doers.
Seeing that Ronan’s wounds are nearly fatal, Cronarch takes the two youths into the Otherworld, where he has herbs and spells that can save Ronan. Once into the magical lands, the adventures begin. For soon, Ronan and Cleah find that the way out of the Otherworld is not as easy as the way in, and in order to return to the World, they must travel through the territory of the dangerous trolls.
Follow Ronan and Cleah as they confront not only with those who would kill them, but their own beliefs about who they are and where they belong.
